It's difficult to picture 'James Bond' without his trademark weapon—the Walther PPK, whether in hand or holstered, which has been as much a part of 007's image as his tuxedo. But this week, Amazon Prime Video made an exact attempt at it. As part of a promotional refresh coinciding with James Bond Day, the streaming service unveiled new versions of Bond posters in which all firearms had been digitally removed or cropped out. 

The internet went crazy on this. Within days, Amazon quietly pulled down the altered images and replaced them with gun‑free film stills, but the debate around the removal of a key characteristic of the spy still exists.

Posters Get a Makeover—But Something's Missing

The newly posted artwork on Prime Video U.K. presented an uncanny version of Bond: Sean Connery's iconic cross‑armed Dr. No image now shows him with empty hands, the Walther PPK having been airbrushed out. The gun in Pierce Brosnan's 'GoldenEye,' and numerous others was merely cut or deleted. One notable example is 'A View to a Kill,' by Roger Moore, in which Moore's arms seem abnormally extended in order to shove the weapon out of the frame. 

Daniel Craig's hand—as well as the gun—is also completely obscured by cropping in the 'Spectre' poster. The edits span across the Bond eras—Connery, Moore, Brosnan, Craig—and many fans described the new versions as awkward, hollow, or outright bizarre.

Stills from the movies were used in place of the altered photos, however remarkably, none of the new stills feature James Bond brandishing a gun. Critics cautioned that sanitizing Bond's image could alienate devoted fans and accused Amazon of "cultural censorship."

Although the business has not yet made an official announcement regarding the choice, industry experts surmise that it was an effort to conform to stricter content guidelines. However, the decision backfired because fans saw it as a basic misinterpretation of what made Bond—the 'Bond.'

Bond's Gun: A Legacy Symbol Too Iconic to Erase

James Bond's silhouette, which is frequently characterized by a tuxedo, a smirk, and a gun, has served as a visual shorthand for the character's cool, calculating danger for more than 60 years. The Walther PPK is more than just a weapon; it is a part of the mythology, signifying Bond's status as a spy from the Cold War and his permission to murder.

Donald Glover has reportedly left his previous creative partnership with channel FX, to sign a multiple-year, eight-figure deal with Amazon.

The multi-talented artist is also said to be getting a content channel on Prime Video.

The Amazon Deal

Glover  is responsible for the FX show 'Atlanta'. Stephen Glover, Donald's brother who also writes and produces 'Atlanta' alongside him — also reportedly signed an overall deal with Amazon too.

The Amazon deal, which has been in the works for weeks, will also see Glover executive produce other projects for Amazon. Sources note one such project is already beginning to come together: a potential series called 'Hive', which is rumored to revolve around a Beyoncé-inspired figure and stem from writer Janine Nabers.

The project has already begun staffing a writers room, with sources noting Malia Obama, daughter of former U.S. president Barack Obama, is among those recruited to work on the series!

Donald Glover, who goes by Childish Gambino also, will not impact FX's critical darling 'Atlanta', due to the move. The award-winning comedy has already been renewed for seasons three and four and, per sources, will begin production in March. Both seasons will be filmed back-to-back in a bid to return the comedy to the air as soon as possible.

Yoko Ono and Janie Hendrix are launching a new music channel called the Coda Collection. The channel will stream exclusively via OTT Amazon Prime starting February 18th in the U.S., and stream globally throughout 2021.

The Coda Collection

The channel is combined with an editorial destination across Coda’s desktop and mobile sites, helmed by esteemed music critic Greg Kot. The aim is to provide another perspective on the artists and music featured in the content. Coda Collection is named after the new multimedia company Yoko Ono and Janie Hendrix cofounded with CEO Jim Spinello, John McDermott, and Jonas Herbsman.

“John [Lennon] was always on the cutting edge of music and culture,” Yoko Ono said in a statement about the new venture. “The Coda Collection will be a new way for fans to connect on a deeper level.”

A Golden Anthology

Several movie premieres will be offered at launch of Yoko Ono's channel, including 'Music, Money, Madness…Jimi Hendrix In Maui', 'The Rolling Stones On The Air', 'Johnny Cash at San Quentin', 'Miranda Lambert: Revolution Live By Candlelight'. It will include newly filmed, exclusive performances by such artists as Jane’s Addiction and Stone Temple Pilots. Fans will be able to see the streaming premiers of Bob Dylan’s “Trouble No More,”. The forthcoming authorized Dave Grohl documentary, and performances by Dead & Company will also be featured.
