The route from the bats to humans is inconclusive and widely disputed. Paul while speaking to Howard Stern -- a well respected radio host -- had this to say: “I really hope that this will mean the Chinese government says, ‘OK guys, we have really got to get super hygienic around here.’ Let’s face it, it is a little bit medieval eating bats.” 

We are all for the ban on the wet markets for the reasons of animal cruelty and for the support of vegetarianism, but in these times of panic, comments like above can hurt the racial sentiments of people in question and create unwarranted animosity. 

When diverted back to the question of banning wet markets, he said, “I think it makes a lot of sense … when you’ve got the obscenity of some of the stuff that’s going on there and what comes out of it, they might as well be letting off atomic bombs. It’s affecting the whole world. I understand that part of it is going to be: people have done it for ever, this is the way we do things. But they did slavery forever, too. You’ve got to change things at some point.”

Not sure if this is a fair comparison by any measure or if the gravity of the two can be put in the same bucket at all, but here is hoping it comes from a place of concern for mankind.
