From classic slashers like 'Halloween' to modern psychological thrillers like 'Hereditary,' our fascination with fear is undeniable. But what exactly draws us to the very emotions we spend our lives trying to avoid? Science has some fascinating answers.

Science Behind Loving Horror Films

At its core, fear is a survival mechanism. When our brains sense danger—real or imagined—the amygdala triggers a rush of adrenaline and cortisol, heightening our alertness and preparing the body for "fight or flight." Horror films mimic this experience safely. Viewers get the thrill of facing danger without the real-world risk. It's the same reason people ride roller coasters—the fear is controlled, and that makes it fun.

Psychologists suggest that horror films offer a safe space to explore intense emotions. In a secure environment, viewers can confront deep-seated anxieties—death, the unknown, loss of control—and emerge unscathed. This cathartic process helps some people feel more in control of their fears. After the credits roll, the sense of relief and excitement can even release dopamine, the "feel-good" chemical linked to pleasure and reward.

Social Explanation for Loving Horror Films

There's also a social side to our love of horror. Watching scary movies together fosters bonding—think of friends screaming in unison or couples holding hands during a jump scare. These shared emotional highs and lows strengthen relationships through collective adrenaline and laughter. Horror, in many ways, connects people through shared vulnerability.

Personality also plays a role. Research shows that people high in sensation-seeking or openness to experience tend to enjoy horror more. They're drawn to the unpredictability, creativity, and intensity of the genre. Others may appreciate the moral clarity of horror: the battle between good and evil, survival and destruction, or chaos and order.

Moreover, horror films often reflect societal fears. Zombies, pandemics, haunted houses, and psychological breakdowns all symbolise the collective anxieties of their time. By confronting these themes through fiction, audiences process real-world fears in manageable ways.

Ultimately, our love of horror isn't about enjoying pain or panic—it's about embracing emotion, excitement, and the satisfaction of surviving the scare. The science of fear reveals that horror gives us a rare opportunity to face the darkness and discover our resilience—all from the safety of the couch.

When we think about the music in a movie or TV show, we often focus on the big moments — the dramatic score during a climactic battle, the emotional ballad during a heartbreaking scene. But two critical points often bookend the viewing experience: the opening titles and the end credits. Both use music in ways that shape the audience’s emotions, but they serve very different purposes.

Setting the Stage: The Role of Opening Title Music

The opening title music is all about invitation. It pulls the audience into the world of the story, laying the emotional and stylistic groundwork before the first scene even unfolds.

A well-chosen opening track sets expectations. Think of the brassy, bold theme of ‘Star Wars’ — it immediately signals epic adventure. Compare that to the eerie, minimalist theme of ‘Stranger Things’, which primes viewers for something nostalgic yet unsettling. In some cases, like ‘Skyfall’ or ‘Westworld’, the opening song or score even offers subtle thematic clues about what’s to come.

In short, opening title music is proactive. It's a handshake, a welcome, and a mood-setter all at once.

Key goals of opening title music:

Establish tone and genre

Build immediate emotional engagement

Create anticipation

Introduce thematic ideas

Wrapping It Up: The Purpose of End Credit Music

By the time the end credits roll, the main narrative has ended. The audience is no longer anticipating — they're processing. The music that plays during the credits helps guide that processing.

Sometimes it offers release after intense emotional build-up (Titanic’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’). Other times, it keeps the energy riding high (‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ with ‘Surrender’ by Cheap Trick). Occasionally, it throws in a tonal curveball to make you rethink everything you just watched (Get Out's ‘Redbone’ by Childish Gambino, in an earlier cut).

In essence, end credit music is reactive. It reflects back the experience the audience just had and either eases them out gently or sends them out on a high note.

Key goals of end credit music:

Offer emotional closure

Extend the atmosphere of the story

Let audiences decompress

Leave a lasting impression (sometimes teasing a sequel or hidden scene)

Different Phases, Different Feelings

The fundamental difference lies in the direction of emotional energy:

Opening title music pulls you in.

End credit music lets you go.

Good opening tracks are magnets, good closing tracks are echoes.

Directors and music supervisors understand these phases deeply. That’s why opening titles are often highly synchronized with title visuals and cinematic style, while end credits might feature full songs that can play uninterrupted, giving the audience a freer emotional space.

In some cases, the opening and ending music intentionally mirror each other — using the same theme reimagined differently — to give the story a sense of symmetry. (‘La La Land’ does this beautifully.)

Music at the beginning and end of a film or TV show plays an outsized role in shaping the viewer’s emotional journey. While the opening title music is there to ignite curiosity and focus attention, the end credit music offers reflection, catharsis, or sometimes even provokes new questions.

Different goals, different vibes — but together, they frame the entire experience.

Martin Scorsese, one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th and 21st centuries, has often credited Italian neorealism as a significant influence on his work. This movement, which emerged in Italy in the aftermath of World War II, is characterized by its focus on everyday life, social issues, and the human condition, often employing non-professional actors and on-location shooting to achieve a sense of realism. For Scorsese, whose own heritage and upbringing in an Italian-American community deeply inform his storytelling, neorealism has provided a rich tapestry of techniques and themes that have permeated his filmography.

Early Life And Heritage

Born in 1942 to Italian-American parents in Queens, New York, and raised in the neighbourhood of Little Italy, Scorsese was steeped in the culture and traditions of his heritage from a young age. This environment, marked by its vibrant community life and complex social dynamics, served as a backdrop for many of his films. Scorsese’s childhood experiences and his deep connection to his Italian roots are evident in his detailed, authentic portrayals of urban life and the Italian-American experience.

Introduction to Italian Neorealism

Scorsese’s formal introduction to Italian neorealism came during his time at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he was exposed to the works of directors such as Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, and Luchino Visconti. Films like Rossellini’s ‘Rome’, ‘Open City’ (1945) and De Sica’s ‘Bicycle Thieves’ (1948) left a lasting impression on the young filmmaker. The raw, unfiltered portrayal of post-war Italian society resonated with Scorsese, who saw parallels between the struggles depicted in these films and the challenges faced by the working-class families in his own neighbourhood.

Cinematic Techniques And Storytelling

Italian neorealism’s emphasis on realism, social commentary, and character-driven narratives can be seen throughout Scorsese’s work. One of the hallmarks of neorealism is the use of real locations rather than studio sets, a technique that Scorsese has employed to great effect. In ‘Mean Streets’ (1973), his breakout film, the gritty streets of New York’s Little Italy are as much a character as the people inhabiting them. The film’s authenticity is enhanced by Scorsese’s decision to shoot on location, capturing the texture and vibrancy of urban life.

Also Read: Cinematic Techniques: From Hitchcock to Tarantino

Neorealism’s focus on the ordinary and the marginalized also finds echoes in Scorsese’s films. Like the Italian neorealists, Scorsese often centers his stories on individuals who exist on the fringes of society. In ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), Travis Bickle’s descent into madness is portrayed with a stark realism that reflects the influence of neorealist principles. The film’s raw depiction of loneliness and alienation in a decaying urban landscape draws a direct line to the social concerns of post-war Italian cinema.

Themes of Faith And Morality

Another significant aspect of Italian neorealism that influenced Scorsese is its exploration of faith, morality, and human dignity. Scorsese, who was raised in a devout Catholic household, frequently grapples with these themes in his work. Films like ‘Raging Bull’ (1980) and ‘Silence’ (2016) delve deeply into the moral and spiritual crises of their protagonists, much like the introspective and often morally complex characters found in neorealist cinema. The introspection and moral ambiguity present in the works of Rossellini and De Sica are mirrored in Scorsese’s nuanced portrayals of his characters’ internal struggles.

Legacy And Continued Influence

The influence of Italian neorealism on Scorsese is not just a relic of his early career but continues to inform his work. Even in his later films, such as ‘The Irishman’ (2019), there is a commitment to authenticity, character depth, and social commentary that harks back to the neorealist tradition. Scorsese’s dedication to portraying the human condition in its most unvarnished form is a testament to the enduring impact of Italian neorealism on his artistic vision.

In conclusion, Martin Scorsese’s heritage and the influence of Italian neorealism have profoundly shaped his approach to filmmaking. The techniques and themes of neorealism—realism, social commentary, and a focus on the human condition—are woven into the fabric of Scorsese’s work, from his early films to his most recent projects. This rich cinematic legacy continues to inspire Scorsese, driving him to create films that are not only visually compelling but also deeply human.

Claymation is a truly one-of-a-kind animation technique. Crafted frame by frame using clay figures and meticulously built sets, it’s a process that requires intense patience, creativity, and a steady hand. Unlike digital animation, which can be tweaked endlessly on a screen, claymation relies on physical materials being moved in tiny increments and captured by camera—sometimes hundreds or thousands of times for just a few seconds of footage. The result? A tactile, handcrafted style that feels alive in a way few other formats can match.

Although often linked with children’s entertainment, claymation has been used to tell a surprisingly wide range of stories. From lighthearted comedies and family adventures to eerie fantasies and emotional dramas, the medium has proven its versatility time and time again. Studios like Aardman Animations, Laika, and visionary directors such as Nick Park and Henry Selick have elevated claymation into an art form, blending technical precision with heartfelt storytelling.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a clay figure walk, smile, or fly through the air—especially knowing it was all built and animated by hand. Even in today’s era of fast, polished CGI, claymation still has a unique appeal. It’s imperfect in the best way possible: charming, textured, and full of character. That handcrafted feel gives these films a soul that sticks with viewers long after the credits roll.

Whether you're a longtime fan of stop-motion or you're just curious to explore something different, this list is a great place to start. From British classics to modern masterpieces, these claymation films offer some of the most inventive and heartfelt storytelling in animation history.

In the realm of cinema, satire stands as a formidable weapon, capable of cutting through societal norms and exposing the absurdities and contradictions that often go unnoticed. From Jonathan Swift's ‘A Modest Proposal’ to Charlie Chaplin's ‘The Great Dictator,’ satire has been a vehicle for societal critique, using humour and irony to challenge power structures and provoke thought. In the modern era, filmmakers continue to harness the subversive power of satire, employing it to lampoon society and ignite discussions on pressing issues. Through incisive wit and cunning storytelling, these films serve as mirrors to our world, reflecting its flaws and hypocrisies with unflinching honesty.

The Role of Satire in Cinema:

Satire in cinema operates on multiple levels, blending humour with social commentary to deliver potent messages. It takes aim at various targets, including politics, religion, culture, and human behaviour. By exaggerating realities or presenting them in absurd contexts, satire exposes the underlying truths that often escape conventional scrutiny.

One of the defining features of cinematic satire is its ability to entertain while delivering a sharp critique. Through humour, filmmakers engage audiences, drawing them into a world where the familiar is twisted and distorted, inviting reflection on the absurdities of everyday life. Whether through dark comedy, parody, or farce, satire challenges viewers to question the status quo and reconsider their preconceptions.

Examples of Satirical Masterpieces:

Several films exemplify the subversive power of satire, leaving an indelible mark on cinema and society alike. Stanley Kubrick's ‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb’ (1964) remains a seminal work in this genre. By satirizing Cold War tensions and nuclear paranoia, Kubrick exposes the irrationality of military logic and political brinkmanship, highlighting the absurdity of mutually assured destruction.

Similarly, Terry Gilliam's ‘Brazil’ (1985) offers a dystopian vision of a bureaucratic nightmare, where oppressive systems suffocate individuality and humanity. Through dark humour and surreal imagery, Gilliam critiques the dehumanizing effects of totalitarianism and the erosion of personal freedoms in modern society.

More recent examples include Bong Joon-ho's ‘Parasite’ (2019), which explores class divisions and social inequality through a darkly comedic lens. By juxtaposing the lives of two families from different socioeconomic backgrounds, Bong exposes the inherent injustices and contradictions within capitalist societies, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about privilege and exploitation.

Impact and Controversy:

Satirical films often spark controversy, confronting audiences with uncomfortable truths and challenging prevailing ideologies. In some cases, they face censorship or backlash from those unwilling to confront their own complicity in perpetuating societal injustices. However, the best satirical works endure precisely because of their ability to provoke thought and inspire dialogue.

In an age marked by political upheaval, social unrest, and widespread disillusionment, the subversive power of satire has never been more relevant. Through cinema, filmmakers continue to wield this weapon with precision and purpose, shining a light on the absurdities and injustices that pervade our world. By challenging authority, exposing hypocrisy, and questioning the status quo, satirical films invite audiences to imagine a better, more equitable future—one where laughter serves as a catalyst for change. As long as there are injustices to be exposed and truths to be revealed, satire will remain a vital tool in the filmmaker's arsenal, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, laughter has the power to illuminate the path forward.

In the world of cinema, special effects play a pivotal role in captivating audiences and bringing fantastical worlds to life. From epic battles in distant galaxies to heart-stopping car chases on city streets, special effects have revolutionized the way filmmakers tell stories and create immersive cinematic experiences. Let’s delve into the intricate role of special effects in crafting cinematic spectacles that leave audiences in awe.

Evolution of Special Effects:

Special effects have come a long way since the early days of cinema. In the past, filmmakers relied on practical effects such as miniatures, matte paintings, and puppetry to achieve visual feats on screen. While these techniques were groundbreaking in their time, they often had limitations in terms of realism and scale. However, advancements in technology, particularly in computer-generated imagery (CGI), have transformed the landscape of special effects, allowing filmmakers to create breathtaking visuals that were once unimaginable.

Enhancing Storytelling:

One of the primary functions of special effects is to enhance storytelling. Whether it's creating otherworldly creatures, building immersive environments, or simulating epic battles, special effects serve as a powerful tool for filmmakers to bring their creative vision to life. By seamlessly integrating visual effects into the narrative, filmmakers can transport audiences to new worlds and evoke emotional responses that resonate long after the credits roll.

Creating Spectacular Action Sequences:

Action sequences have become synonymous with cinematic spectacles, thanks in large part to the use of special effects. From explosive gunfights to gravity-defying stunts, special effects allow filmmakers to push the boundaries of what is possible on screen. By combining practical effects with CGI, filmmakers can choreograph jaw-dropping action sequences that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Building Immersive Worlds:

One of the hallmarks of a cinematic spectacle is its ability to transport audiences to immersive and fantastical worlds. Special effects play a crucial role in building these worlds, whether it's the bustling streets of a futuristic city or the vast landscapes of a distant planet. By meticulously crafting every detail, from the architecture to the flora and fauna, special effects help create environments that feel tangible and lived-in, drawing audiences deeper into the cinematic experience.

Pushing Technological Boundaries:

The field of special effects is constantly evolving, with filmmakers continually pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved on screen. Advancements in CGI technology, motion capture, and virtual reality have opened up new possibilities for filmmakers to create even more immersive and realistic spectacles. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more groundbreaking visual effects that redefine the way we experience cinema.

Special effects have become an integral part of creating cinematic spectacles that dazzle and captivate audiences. From enhancing storytelling to creating immersive worlds and pushing technological boundaries, special effects continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of cinema. As filmmakers continue to innovate and push the limits of what is possible, we can only imagine the spectacular spectacles that await us in the years to come.

In the realm of storytelling, whether it's on stage, on screen, or in literature, every element plays a vital role in conveying the narrative. Among these elements, costume design stands out as a powerful tool for setting the scene and enriching the audience's experience. It goes beyond mere aesthetics; costume design is a language of its own, speaking volumes about character, time period, social status, and even the underlying themes of the story.

Costumes are the visual embodiment of characters, offering insights into their personalities, motivations, and relationships. From the lavish gowns of royalty to the tattered rags of a beggar, each costume choice provides valuable context and depth to the characters, helping to establish their identities within the narrative. For instance, a character clad in sleek, modern attire may convey sophistication and confidence, while one dressed in rugged, worn-out clothing suggests a life of hardship and struggle.

Moreover, costume design serves as a vehicle for transporting the audience to different time periods and settings. By meticulously recreating the fashion trends of a particular era or culture, costume designers can immerse viewers in a world that may be far removed from their own. Whether it's the extravagant attire of the Renaissance or the grungy streetwear of the 1990s, costumes evoke a sense of authenticity and historical accuracy that enhances the overall believability of the story.

In addition to reflecting the external world of the narrative, costumes also reflect the internal journey of the characters. Subtle changes in wardrobe can signify growth, transformation, or inner turmoil. For example, a character who begins the story in drab, muted colours but gradually transitions to brighter, more vibrant hues may symbolize their newfound optimism or liberation. These visual cues help to convey the emotional arc of the characters and deepen the audience's emotional connection to the story.

Costume design also plays a crucial role in reinforcing thematic motifs and symbolism within the narrative. Colours, fabrics, and accessories can be carefully chosen to echo key themes and motifs, enriching the storytelling experience on a subconscious level. For instance, a recurring motif of butterflies in the costume design may symbolize themes of metamorphosis and personal growth, while the strategic use of red hues may foreshadow impending danger or passion.

Furthermore, costume design can also contribute to world-building by fleshing out the social and cultural context of the story. By paying attention to details such as dress codes, class distinctions, and cultural traditions, costume designers can create a rich tapestry of visual storytelling that adds depth and complexity to the fictional world. Whether it's the opulent regalia of a royal court or the utilitarian uniforms of a dystopian society, costumes help to establish the rules and norms that govern the characters' lives.

In conclusion, costume design is a multifaceted art form that plays a pivotal role in setting the scene and enriching the narrative experience. Through careful attention to detail, costume designers bring characters to life, transport audiences to different worlds, and imbue stories with deeper layers of meaning and symbolism. From the grandeur of a period drama to the gritty realism of a contemporary thriller, costumes are essential tools for storytellers seeking to create immersive, unforgettable worlds.

For centuries, the story of star-crossed lovers has remained one of the most heartbreaking yet compelling romance tropes in pop culture. From ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to ‘Titanic’, audiences have been drawn to doomed love stories where fate, war, family rivalries, or tragic circumstances keep two people apart. But in recent years, filmmakers have started to challenge this narrative, showing that love can sometimes win against the odds.

Modern films are rewriting the rules of star-crossed romance—offering hope where there was once only heartbreak. Let’s explore some movies that break the cycle, proving that fate doesn’t always have the final say.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) – Defying Tradition for Love

In many star-crossed love stories, class differences keep couples apart. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ initially sets up this conflict, with Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding) struggling against his ultra-wealthy family’s disapproval of their relationship. The film draws parallels to classics like ‘Romeo and Juliet’—Rachel is seen as “not good enough,” and Nick is pressured to choose duty over love.

How It Breaks the Trope:

Instead of ending in heartbreak, the film subverts expectations by allowing Nick and Rachel to fight for their love. Rachel chooses to walk away, proving her self-worth, but Nick ultimately defies his family’s expectations and proposes. Unlike traditional star-crossed lovers, they don’t surrender to fate—they rewrite it.

Palm Springs (2020) – Escaping a Time Loop Together

Time-loop movies often trap characters in cycles of repetition, mirroring the inescapable fate of star-crossed lovers. ‘Palm Springs’ follows Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti), two strangers stuck in a never-ending day. Initially, their love seems doomed—what’s the point of falling for someone if time always resets?

How It Breaks the Trope:

Unlike traditional star-crossed romances where external forces keep the lovers apart, ‘Palm Springs’ lets its characters take control. Instead of resigning to an endless loop, Sarah actively seeks a way out, using science to escape the cycle. In the end, they choose each other and a future, proving that love doesn’t have to be trapped by destiny.

Your Name (2016) – Love That Transcends Time and Space

Makoto Shinkai’s ‘Your Name’ is a film that initially seems to follow the tragic path of star-crossed lovers. Mitsuha and Taki, two strangers who mysteriously swap bodies, form a deep bond across time. However, a cruel twist reveals that Mitsuha died years ago in a disaster—implying their love was always fated to end in loss.

How It Breaks the Trope:

Instead of accepting this fate, Taki changes history. He finds a way to warn Mitsuha, saving her and her town from destruction. Though they lose their memories of each other, the film ends with a hopeful reunion years later, proving that love can overcome even time itself.

The Big Sick (2017) – Love Overcoming Uncertainty

Based on the real-life story of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, ‘The Big Sick’ tackles a different kind of doomed romance—one shaped by cultural differences and a life-threatening illness. Kumail (playing a version of himself) falls for Emily, but when she falls into a coma, he’s left in limbo, unsure if they’ll ever have a future together.

How It Breaks the Trope:

In many star-crossed stories, illness is an inescapable fate (think ‘A Walk to Remember’ or ‘The Fault in Our Stars’). But here, Emily survives, and the couple must work through real-life challenges instead of succumbing to tragedy. The film’s ending is not just about survival, but about the messiness of love and second chances.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) – Love in Infinite Realities

This multiversal epic follows Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) and her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) as they navigate multiple realities, each showing different versions of their relationship. In one world, they’re married but struggling. In another, they never got together. And in a beautifully strange reality, they’re just two sentient rocks.

How It Breaks the Trope:

Unlike traditional star-crossed lovers who are torn apart by fate, Evelyn and Waymond’s love story is about choosing each other—even in universes where they didn’t. The film challenges the idea that destiny controls love, instead emphasizing that love is a conscious act, not an inevitable tragedy.

Love Doesn’t Have to Be Doomed

For years, star-crossed lovers were defined by heartbreak, as if love was only powerful when it ended in tragedy. But modern films are proving that love can break the cycle. Whether it’s through rewriting fate (Your Name), rejecting societal pressures (Crazy Rich Asians), or escaping an endless loop (Palm Springs), today’s love stories show that sometimes, love wins.

Perhaps the real evolution of the trope is this: love doesn’t have to be about suffering—it can be about fighting for happiness.

Would you rewrite fate for love?

Cinema, often regarded as the most comprehensive form of storytelling, utilizes a myriad of techniques to create compelling narratives and evoke emotions. Cinematic techniques are the tools filmmakers use to convey their stories, build atmosphere, and shape audience perception. From the intricacies of camera angles to the subtleties of lighting, these techniques work harmoniously to immerse viewers in the world on screen. Let’s delve into some of the most fundamental and impactful cinematic techniques that define the art of filmmaking.

Camera Angles And Shots

Angles

High Angle:

The camera looks down on the subject, often making them appear vulnerable or insignificant. This technique is frequently used to depict weakness or defeat.

Low Angle:

The camera looks up at the subject, giving them an aura of power and dominance. It's a common method to portray heroes or villains in a more imposing light.

Dutch Angle:

The camera is tilted, creating a sense of unease or disorientation. This angle is effective in scenes meant to unsettle the audience or indicate that something is wrong.

Shots

Close-Up:

Focuses tightly on a subject, often a character’s face, to capture detailed expressions and convey intense emotions. This shot is crucial for character development and empathy.

Wide Shot:

Shows the subject within their environment, providing context and a sense of scale. It’s often used to establish a scene or emphasize the vastness of a setting.

Over-the-Shoulder Shot:

Positions the camera behind a character's shoulder, commonly used during conversations to show the perspective of interaction between characters.

Lighting

Lighting is a powerful tool in creating mood and atmosphere. It can transform the tone of a scene and influence the audience’s emotional response.

High-Key Lighting:

Produces a bright, even illumination with minimal shadows. This technique is often used in comedies and musicals to evoke a light-hearted, cheerful mood.

Low-Key Lighting:

Creates strong contrasts and deep shadows, contributing to a sense of mystery, tension or danger. It’s a staple in film noir and horror genres.

Backlighting:

Illuminates the subject from behind, creating a silhouette. This can add a dramatic, almost ethereal quality to a scene, often used in moments of revelation or to highlight a character’s profile.

Editing

Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots into sequences, and it plays a critical role in the pacing and structure of the film.

Continuity Editing:

Ensures a seamless flow of action to maintain the illusion of reality. It’s the most common style of editing, aimed at making the narrative easy to follow.

Montage:

A series of short shots edited together to condense time, space and information. Montages are often used to show a passage of time or a series of events in a condensed format.

Jump Cut:

An abrupt transition between shots that disrupts the continuity, often used to create a sense of urgency or disorientation.

Sound

Sound design encompasses everything from dialogue to background noise, music and silence. It’s essential for creating an immersive experience.

Diegetic Sound:

Sound that originates from within the film’s world, such as characters speaking or footsteps. It grounds the audience in the reality of the scene.

Non-Diegetic Sound:

Sound that comes from outside the film’s world, like the score or a narrator’s voice. It adds an additional layer of meaning or emotional impact.

Silence:

The strategic use of silence can be just as powerful as sound, creating tension or highlighting a particular moment or emotion.

Mise-en-Scène

Mise-en-scène refers to the arrangement of everything that appears in the frame – actors, lighting, décor, props, and costume.

Set Design:

The physical space where the action occurs. It provides context and can significantly influence the tone and atmosphere of the film.

Costume and Makeup:

These elements help to define characters, indicate their social status, personality, and even the time period of the narrative.

Blocking:

The precise staging of actors in a scene. It directs the audience’s attention and enhances the storytelling by visually interpreting the script.

The art of cinematic techniques is about more than just visual flair; it’s about creating a cohesive and engaging story that resonates with the audience. By understanding and skillfully applying these techniques, filmmakers can craft memorable and impactful narratives that leave a lasting impression. From the way a scene is lit to the angle of the camera and the rhythm of the editing, every choice contributes to the overall tapestry of the film, making the magic of cinema an enduring and powerful form of art.

This year has been witness to not only a flood of brilliant films but also their accompanying soundtracks. Crafting a track for a film is a whole different ball game, yet one the newbies seem to have mastered with ease.

Very often, it's a film's soundtrack that becomes its defining factor. It helps shape the mood of the visual, while also heightening the crowd's emotional response to the film. And as if these two factors haven't proved to be challenging enough, the score of a film also needs to reflect certain elements of the plot. Be it through songwriting or the mere soundscape of the track itself - it should sprinkle just enough without giving away too much.

This year, a number of rising stars have dabbled in the world of film soundtracks for the very first time. And they go by the names: Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and Travis Scott. But then again, we've also included some old hands: Justin Timberlake, SZA and Beyonce. Their respective scores have arrived with a spectrum of different moods, themes and sounds all aligning with the concept behind the visual. This is an art that not many can master and yet, the challenge of attempting to do so has forged some brilliant pieces of work. Take a look...

'No Time to Die' - Billie Eilish

Crafting the opening theme for a Bond film already poses a sea of pressure. And knowing that your contemporaries go by the names: Sam Smith and Adele, makes the task even harder to chew. Despite having to fill up some big shoes, Billie Eilish did so effortlessly. And this led her to become the youngest artist to craft a Bond theme song.

https://m.

'No Time To Die' was penned down and produced by the young star and her brother, Finneas O'Connell. The piano driven track weaves gently around Billie's melancholic vocals which rise to a superb crescendo. Much like the previous Bond theme songs, 'No Time To Die' witnesses similar chords and powerful bits of songwriting. And in line with the plot, it also arrives with a sense of finality, both in terms of sound and lyrics.

Was I stupid to love you?
Was I reckless to help?
Was it obvious to everybody else

That I'd fallen for a lie?
You were never on my side
Fool me once, fool me twice
Are you death or paradise?
Now you'll never see me cry
There's just no time to die

Poignant and heartbreaking, these words travel through the track, making it an emotionally ripe masterpiece - one that both rivals and stands alongside the scores of her contemporaries.

'The Other Side' - Justin Timberlake Feat. SZA

Moving on to a lighter piece, 'The Other Side' served as the lead single for the "Trolls World Tour". While this is neither Justin Timberlake nor SZA's first rodeo when it comes to soundtracks, you have to admit that this is an unusual collaboration.

Lined with a funky piano riff, Justin's signature falsettos and SZA's infectious vocals - this tracks drags you right out to the dancefloor from the first few notes. Interestingly enough, 'The Other Side' did exceedingly well on charts across the globe. And considering that it settled comfortably in the disco-pop genre, some would say that it made the track ideal for airplay.

The clouds will open up
Blue skies are willing

Back on your feet again
Lift your head, hold it high
You wanna run it back
But you can't turn the time
You start to feel like you're losing your shine
But the grass ain't always greener on the other side

Much like the film itself, the lyrics prove to be straightforward, fun and uplifting. Now, coming to film scores, Justin Timberlake has also dabbled in 2016's "Trolls". He made his landing at the time with the equally groovy number, 'Can't Stop The Feeling'. SZA on the other hand, played a big part in Marvel's "Black Panther" score. She worked alongside Kendrick Lamar for 'All The Stars'.

But this time around, both artists have proven that they're no one hit wonders when it comes to the world of film soundtracks.

'Boss B*tch' - Doja Cat

2020 has been a big year for Doja Cat. Not only did she notch some fine collaborations from the likes of Nicki Minaj and The Weeknd, but she also scored her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. And adding to that steadily growing list of accolades is the track for the hit DC film, "Birds of Prey".

https://m.

This track saw Doja channel her inner Harley Quinn, as she spit fiery rhymes over a sleek set of trap beats. Much like the anti-hero herself, the track embodies all sides of Quinn's character: the unapologetic, the sassy, the confident and of course, the slightly sinister bits too. Here, take a dip into the lyrics:

Said, b*tch, I'm the after you been the before
I been a stallion, you been a sea horse
Don't need a report, don't need a press run
All of my bad pics been all my best ones

And I do my dance and cancel the plans
Said, boo, don't be mad 'cause you had a chance

While this track managed to capture the perfect character sketch, it also left room for more to be drawn. Precisely speaking, 'Boss B*tch' went on to do the rounds on Tik Tok, which further skyrocketed it to fame. And so, Doja Cat continues to conquer new musical realms with an enviable ease.

'Already' - Beyonce

Just a couple weeks back, Beyonce dropped her highly-anticipated visual album, "Black Is King". Her track, 'Already' dropped a day prior to this, giving fans a taste of what was to come.

https://m.

The tune, featuring Shatta Wale and Major Lazer, opens with a poignant spoken-word piece. As 'Already' unfolds, we witness a string of Beyonce's gorgeous melodic runs, interspersed with some feisty rhymes and hip hop beats. From start to finish, this track is in its essence, a celebration of Black culture and power. 'Already' serves as one of the many teachings that find a space on the narrative of "Black Is King".

Remember who you are, ooh
Real king always win, oh
Give up your bread, oh
I'll show your people my love
It's time already, I say it's time already
The line already, I say, line already
Only you got the remedy, I say you got the remedy

Considering that this is after all a visual album, Beyonce puts a lot more emphasis on the music to tell her story. Which is in no way a simpler feat, though it does give her free reign over the narrative.

'The Plan' - Travis Scott

After leaving behind the cryptic cover art for this track, Travis Scott finally made his landing with 'The Plan'. It finds a warm spot on the soundtrack for Christopher Nolan's sci-fi Thriller, "Tenet".

https://m.

Much like Nolan's visuals, this track proves to be immersive and suspenseful. Driven by a thumping bass line and ghostly melodies, 'The Plan' leaves you intrigued within the first few seconds. As the track unravels, each layer features a new rap verse from Travis Scott. They build and build, before dropping you from a height, right into a maw full of distorted sounds. The young rapper worked alongside Ludwig Goransson, who previously had a strong hand to play in the "Black Panther" soundtrack. Now, as we mentioned before, both the soundscape of this track and the lyrics mirror plot points and certain moods from "Tenet". Take a look:

Ride on land, Boeing jet, make it land
In slow motion when I dance
In your eyes I see your trance
I run away and then you prance (Yeah)
If I show the hideaway would you hide out and let it blam? (Yeah, yeah)
Ain't no time, I'm facin' scams, nah, nah (Yeah)

You don't know where we stand
It's true
Know the plan

And so, much like the previous artists, Travis Scott has also proven that a film's score is just as powerful as its visuals.

In an exciting turn of events, Travis Scott just announced that he'd be putting out a brand new single titled, 'The Plan' this week. Oh, but here's the kicker: The new track will find a space on the soundtrack for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming action film "Tenet".

Now, this is no ordinary feat for the young rap star to come by. Much like Christopher Nolan himself, Scott has grown a fondness for dramatic stage sets, bright visuals and strong themes. It's one of the star's defining factors, as a musician. A Travis Scott concert is not just a concert, it's a visual spectacle - one that's entirely immersive and captivating. So, to celebrate Scott's exploration of the soundtrack territory for a big budget film, we've tracked down all his visuals that could make for a great movie poster.

If you thought the man had a flair for the dramatics on stage, you might want to give his Instagram a proper scroll though - it's a whole art museum over there. And so, we've taken the liberty of giving each visual a title and description. So, go ahead and dive right in.
